Success is not a choice

To all people who say “Success is a choice!”
or the hundred variants of that message…

Please explain it to the little orphan,
who was born in a broke country ravaged by war.

Please explain it to the hardworking father,
whose family business went down in the recession.

Please explain it to the jobless girl,
who got kicked out of her house.

We did not choose the places we were born.
We did not choose the families we grew up in.
We did not choose many of the things that happened to us.

And we cannot choose success.

All we can do is accept what we are given
and try to make something of it.
If you want to call that success, fine.

But don’t tell us how our success looks like,
and how it’s a choice,
because that’s simply not true.
